Super Swimmers

I am deathly afraid of large bodies of water.  I have nightmares of getting swallowed up by the Atlantic ocean. Needless to say, I’ve never learned how to swim. My family visits the beach every summer and I stand at the very edge of the ocean barely allowing the sea to touch my toes. When I’m not at the ocean I sit on the side of the kiddie pool and let my feet dangle over the water.  I keep a careful eye on my babies to ensure that they don’t fall in the pool.  This is a terrifying thought and very stressful to have to worry about while on vacation so Mr. Incredible and I decided to let the kids take swimming lessons at Swim Atlanta.

The lessons had a rough start.  My boy was less than excited to get in the olympic sized pool.  He yelled, screamed, hyperventilated, cried and embarrassed the hell out of his father and I while we sat on the bleachers and looked the other way.  His swim instructor wasn’t sure if he would be ready to come back for another dayof swimming.  But she odviously did not understand how much we  paid for those lessons, so back the next day both kids went.

I was relieved that my son in the water without crying. He was like a fish. In and out of the water he went. Watching him bob his head repeatedly underwater  with his sister as they practiced holding their breath for 5 seconds made me proud.  At the end of the week my children had moved leaps and bounds from their first day.  They are by no means Michael Phelps, but at least they aren’t scaredy cats like their mom.

I think its awesome that you’ve got the kids into swimming, and so early! A child who can swim is a child who is safe from potential harm.

I think it’s also wonderful that you are showing them that, even if mommy is a little afraid, you all can still do it and make me proud!

I think every kid should have swimming lessons! My mom can’t swim, and is terrified of water. For that reason she wanted to make sure we could swim, in case we needed to one day save ourselves, and her.

I’m not the best swimmer, and don’t like the deep end of the pool, but I can know how NOT to drown.
